Injury Prevention

This page is dedicated to all of us who have a habit of pushing a tiny bit too much and  as a consequence, sidelining ourselves for weeks or months at a time.  Earlier this winter, I was diagnosed with high hamstring tendonitis and was told that it would take any where from 6-18 months to heal (ouch!).  One cortisone injection (double ouch!) and a few months of rest/PT and I hadn't gotten any better.  It was at that time that I started to seek out additional treatment methods (instead of using vodka).  I hope you find this helpful.

1.  ART - Active Release Technique
In short, ART is treatment that pinpoints the source of a problem and uses trigger point pressure to heal soft tissue injuries.

In Columbus, check out Rhonda and Ken at Primal Kneads for ART:  614-602-4806
The price is right and their waiting area is full of athletes with additional training tips and encouragement.  Tell them we sent you.

2.  Graston Technique

Graston is a little more aggressive (read: painful) than ART, and very effective.  In short, Graston "scrapes" muscles and tendons back in alignment with some sort of stainless steel instrument.  This technique also facilitates blood flow and nutrient delivery by reducing adhesions in muscles and connective tissues.  Fun stuff.

In Columbus, check out Kyle Alexander as a Graston provider and overall triathlon wellness coach.

Long story short, there is hope when you are injured.  Seek out appropriate treatment, quit drinking so much vodka, and get in the pool already!  Your family, friends, co-workers and training buddies will be as glad as you are when your injury has healed.  Everyone is sick of hearing you whine about it - trust me:)
